Witch Way is It to the Bonfire?
While Britain's bonfires are held on November 5th, six days after Halloween, Sweden manages to combine features of both on Walpurgis Night, which falls on April 30th.
Rooted deep in historic pagan tradition and connected with the Beltane festival, the event is marked in different ways around the country, with many areas now lighting bonfires, which are supposed to scare off witches as they fly overhead on their way to meet up and mark Beltane.
Visitors in Sweden at this time can enjoy the fires, festivities, community singing and partying, with plenty of variations in different cities and the festival also marking the coming of spring to the far north.
According to Wikipedia, this includes a carnival parade in Gothenburg and a lot of drinking in Valborg, while Svealand and Uppland have the most firmly established bonfire traditions.
Visitors to Sweden will find plenty of accommodation in the various locations, including cheap hotels.
