Switzerland is located in the heart of central Europe and is bordered by Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. Switzerland is a federal republic that has a long history of being a neutral country in military and politics.

The country has an estimated population of just over 7 million. Switzerland has been a federal state since 1848. The capital is Bern and the country's largest city is Zurich, which most people when asked think actually is the capital. With Switzerland being bordered and influenced through history by its neighbours, its not surprising that German, French, Italian and Romanash are spoke and understood threw the country.

Switzerland Geography

Switzerland in land size is quiet a small European country the area covered is 41,285km2. And with a large mountainous section, the country has a population density of 184 people per square km. The country comprises of three area these are the Swiss Alps, the Swiss Plateau and the Jura Mountains. The Alps highest point is Dufour Peak that stands at 4,634 meters high. The Alps also has several glaciers that are headwaters for some of Europe's main rivers. These rivers are the Rhine the Rhone and the Inn, also the Aare runs down into lake Geneva and lake Zurich.

The Jura Mountains are a smaller range that runs along in the Northwest of the country. The country can have varying climate changes range from harsh mountain conditions to almost Mediterranean like climate at the southern tip of Switzerland.

Swiss Economy

The Swiss economy has been the envy of many of its neighbours for a long time. They have a stable and prosperous modern market with a GDP higher than most of the big western European economies.

For most of the 20th century Switzerland was considered to be the wealthiest country in Europe. The country however since the 1990s has seen a slowdown in growth, resulting in Switzerland now being ranked fourth among the European states. Switzerland now finds itself behind Ireland, Denmark and Norway.

Swiss Demographics

Switzerland has three main languages and one unofficial these are German, which accounts for 64% then French 19% and Italian with 8% there is also Romanash spoken by 1%. The federal government is obliged to communicate in all three main languages.

The German that is spoken is in Switzerland is totally different dialect then that of the natural German. The spoken German is referred to as Swiss- German were as the written is the same as standard German. Foreign workers make up almost 20% of the population.

Religion in Switzerland

The most popular followed faith in Switzerland is the Roman Catholic faith. This accounts for about 43% of the population. There are several Protestant denominations that make up 35%.

With immigration from the Muslim world there are about 4% now practicing Muslim's and 2% Eastern Orthodox.

Swiss Culture

Its neighbours through history have heavily influenced Switzerland's culture. Traditionally Switzerland is not considered by many of having its own culture, but this conception is deceptive.

The neutrality of Switzerland has attracted many creative people from around the world as well as its low taxes.
