A Lot of Hot Air in Switzerland

A lot of hot air in Switzerland Visitors to Switzerland in January will be treated to quite a spectacle as hundreds of hot air balloons take to the skies above the Swiss Alps.

Reportedly attracted to the unique climate conditions of the Pays d'Enhaut region, some 130 balloons regularly gather for Hot Air Balloon Week in Chateau d'Oex.

This fleet of multicoloured aeronautic adventurers make an impressive sight as they drift over the peaks of the Alps and the Jura mountains.

Travellers staying in cheap hotels in Switzerland will be able to find a number of attractions in the town itself, including celebrations of various forms of aerial sport, races and demonstrations.

One of the most striking elements of the festival, which runs from January 19th to 27th, is the 'night glow' evening, when the slopes around Chateau d'Oex are illuminated by balloon burners and hundreds of candles.

Chateau d'Oex is the capital of the Pays d'Enhaut region and famous for formerly being the home of Dutch artist MC Escher and British actor David Niven.
