Africa Beneath the Alps

Switzerland gets a huge taste of all things African in May 2007 when the 18th Afro-Phingsten Festival Winterthur takes place.

Held in the city of Winterthur near Zurich, the festival runs from May 24th until June 6th, with organisers promising a mix of concerts, workshops, a world bazaar, Africa-themed market and a film festival, all infused with an African theme.

Reggae, blues, soul and traditional music form the basis of the concerts, while goods available at the bazaar include all manner of crafts, souvenirs and food from around the continent.

The purpose of the event is to foster understanding and cultural links between the Swiss and Africans.

Apart from the festival, visitors staying in cheap hotels in Winterthur have a variety of things to see and do.

Zurich is close by and easily reached by train, offering a wide range of museums, nightlife and fine panoramic views, such as from Uetliberg, a mountain overlooking the city and nearby Lake Zurich.
