Hay, What's Going On?

Hay, what's going on? Lots of people head out to the Alps for their winter sports, but if skiing, snowboarding and skating are good, some may still feel the urge to see something a bit different.

Such a different event takes place in Adelboden near Frutigen in Switzerland, where a race known as the Horaschlitta-Rena takes place on January 18th.

This is a sledge race with a difference: based on an age-old custom, where hay would be stored in containers called finneln, then brought down for the winter season.

As a result, competitors will be hurtling down the slopes jammed among huge bales of hay, which must at least provide some padding for any spectacular crashes.

While spectators can have bales of fun watching the event, there are also many things to do in the area, from visiting a mountain cheese-maker, enjoying the scenery, such as the Engstligen Waterfall and the local mountain lakes, not to mention participating in more traditional winter sports.

Adelboden has a range of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
