Icely Does It

Icely does it Those who fancy starting the new year with some serious adventure may like to know that the Swiss alpine resort of Kandersteg hosts an ice climbing festival from January 5th to the 7th.

Featuring an international cast of top ice climbers, this winter wonderland event south of Berne offers huge ice cliffs, with the experts putting on demonstrations before visitors get their own chance to don the crampons, grab the ice axe and have a go.

The festival combines slide-shows with an ice climbing party, plus a chance to check out the latest gear.

Apart from the ice climbing, Kandersteg offers a range of winter sports activities, with skiing, snowboarding and hill-walking all available, along with cable car rides offering panoramic views.

Visitors can also make a short trip north to Berne, a UNESCO world heritage city, to enjoy its many charming and historic buildings.

The area has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
