It's All Greek – Except for the Swiss Bits
Anyone thinking that the ancient Athenian concept of direct democracy was dead may be in for a surprise, for it is alive and well in present-day Switzerland.
The last Sunday in April sees all the voters of Appenzell Inner Rhodes converge on the town of Appenzell, where they gather in the town square to elect the Canton authorities and pass laws.
Everything and anything below federal level can be voted on, while the long-standing tradition of the meeting has many delightful elements, not least the use of swords to indicate votes (since 1991 there has been the option of using a voting card instead, but many stick to tradition).
While watching this long-standing tradition unfold is fascinating, the area has plenty more for visitors staying in cheap hotels to see and do.
The region has fine scenery, with both the upper end of the Rhine Valley and Lake Constance nearby.
