Lake Race Sails into Geneva

Lake race sails into Geneva Visitors to Geneva will be able to experience a unique spectacle in June as the city hosts Europe's biggest lake-sailing race.

The Bol d'Or Mirabaud will take to the waters of Lake Geneva between June 13th and 15th.

More than 600 boats and yachts traditionally compete for the Golden Cup in this event, which takes place in a location whose choppy waters belie the picturesque serenity of the surrounding mountains.

With depths of up to one kilometre at the centre and unpredictable currents, Lake Geneva can be a treacherous place for the competitors in the Bol d'Or Mirabaud.

The event has been a tradition in Switzerland since 1939 and in 2006 it was won by three-time America's Cup winner Russell Coutts.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Geneva will have no trouble finding some stunning landscapes and natural sights to enjoy, with Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe, and the Chamonix Valley both easily accessible from the city.
