People who love a good fair may find just what they are looking for in the Swiss city of Basle, when the Hermass takes place in October and November over a ten-day period, the dates still to be confirmed.
The annual festival, which has been running longer continuously than any other in Europe, will celebrate its 536th year in 2006.
It features a huge street fair held across the town, with rides, stalls and entertainments running in parallel with the large Messe Basel commercial fair.
Those coming to join the ten days of street partying will find Basle well equipped with accommodation, including cheap hotels.
Basle is a historic city on the banks of the Rhine, 2,000 years old and, according to the local tourist board, best explored on foot.
The city also offers a good location for visiting central Europe, with the French and German borders close by, offering good access to the Black Forest.
