Pump It Up
For those who love their pumpkins and cannot wait for Halloween, the Swiss city of Zurich is hosting Europe's Biggest Pumpkin Competition, at a date to be confirmed in October.
Giant orange vegetables converge on the city every year for the contest, held at the Jucker Farmart, with last year's winner weighing 341 pounds.
Anyone without an enormous pumpkin can come and watch the competition for free.
Set on the banks of Lake Zurich (Zurichsee), Zurich itself has enjoyed a growing reputation in recent years, with the Lonely Planet describing it as "the new Berlin" with lots of new bars, restaurants and shops.
It also offers the Swiss National Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Lindt and Sprungli chocolate factory, while for those who fancy combining the trip with some skiing the Alps are well within reach.
The city has plenty of accommodation including cheap hotels.
