Siam, as it was formerly known, was the union of two Kingdoms, that of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai in about the 14th century. The country’s culture was largely influenced by China and India. Although, the Europeans have been greatly interested in this land since the 16th century, they have never been able to colonist his country as they did so many others in Asia. This is due to the very strong rulers that Thailand has had and also the strategic position of the land acting as a natural buffer between French colonies tot he North and British colonies to the south. During World War II, Thailand formed an alliance with Japan, however, once the war was over, Thailand became an ally of the United States of America. Thailand has a democratic government with a Prime Minister at its head.
