Blossoming Sculptures in Chiang Mai
The first weekend in February sees surely one of Thailand's most fragrant cultural events take to the streets as Chiang Mai hosts its annual flower festival.
Visitors to the northern province are treated to a stunning spectacle as sculptures of Hindu temples, animals and figures made entirely from flowers are paraded through the streets.
Northern Thailand is well known for its wealth of flowers and plants which bloom as the country's cool season draws to a close.
Green-fingered travellers and eagle-eyed horticulturalists can challenge themselves to spot blooms such as the damask rose, yellow and white chrysanthemums and some of the 3,000 species of orchid that grow in Thailand.
Chiang Mai is one of the must-see destinations for people staying in cheap hotels in Thailand, partly owing to its natural surroundings of the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river, and some of the highest mountains in Thailand.
It also boasts a number of man-made sites of interest, including the Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep and the Wat Chiang Man Buddhist temples.
