Bun Bang Theory
Those who fancy a trip to Thailand that goes with a bang will be in the right place at the right time if they head up to Yasothon in May. (Date to be confirmed)
Yasothon Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival is a pyrothechin expression of an old tradition, in which traditionally dressed performers stage a Bun Bang dance before the rockets take to the sky.
The first rocket is meant to spur the rain gods into action, with the quantity of rain being greater the higher it goes.
Following this, a rocket competition sees competitors trying to outdo each other with the size, altitude and explosiveness of their rockets.
Anyone whose rocket fails to go off is not so ceremonially dumped in the mud.
The whole festival, which coincides with the start of the rice growing season, is marked with parades, dancing and merriment.
