Ghostly but Great
Culture vultures heading to Thailand will be able to combine tradition with leisure in Phuket during August, when the Por Tor Festival takes place.
Spread over a fortnight in August and early September 2007 (dates to be confirmed), the festival centres on the traditional Chinese belief that the hungry ghosts of the dead surface from the underworld at this time, with the living needing to placate them with food offerings.
Chief among these are traditional turtle-shaped cakes, said to aid longevity.
In addition to the festival, which reflects the large Chinese community in this part of Thailand, Phuket offers a paradise of aquamarine sea, white sandy beaches, lush palm trees and opportunities to sample all kinds of interesting cuisine.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels, which are plentiful in Phuket along with various other facilities, can laze on the beach or enjoy a variety of watersports.
At night the resort comes alive as its vibrant nightlife takes over.
