Kwae a Trip

Kwae a trip Visitors to Kanchanaburi in central Thailand can relive the events of the famous film Bridge over the river Kwai, between November 24th and December 7th.

Bridge over the River Kwae week (Kwae is the proper spelling – it rhymes with square) has two aims: to commemorate the terrible history of the wartime events there, where prisoners of war were forced to build the bridge in terrible working conditions with many fatalities; then, on a more positive note, a celebration of local culture and scenery.

Vistors will find many poignant reminders of the past here: the bridge itself, reconstructed with parts of the wartime structure after several Allied bombing raids in 1945; the war museum with its reconstruction of a POW camp; the cemetery, containing the graves of over 800 prisoners who died due to hunger, malaria and other causes and an archaeological exhibition.

The area also offers jungle treks for the adventurous and some spectacular waterfalls.

Kanchanaburi is in the centre of Thailand and easily reached from Bangkok, with daily buses or even trains on the railway itself.

Bangkok has a wealth of tourist accommodation, including cheap hotels.
