Light Side of the Moon

Light side of the moon Visitors to Thailand will never be short of festivals to see, with the Loi Krathong festival in Sukhothai running from November 1st to the 5th being another chance to sample traditional culture.

Like many Thai festivals, it revolves around long-standing Buddhist traditions and the first full moon of the month.

It is celebrated all over the country, but Sukhothai, an ancient Siamese capital city whose name means Dawn of Happiness in English, offers a long history and cultural heritage that makes it an appropriate setting.

As ever, there is no lack of rituals, dancing, fireworks and light shows, with boat processions down the river where the Buddha's footprint was said to be set.

Sukhothai has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.

The city is a Unesco world heritage site, with a wealth of temples and monuments.

Lying 427 kilometres north of Bangkok, the city can be incorporated into a wider tour of the country.
