Phuket Plays Host to Hungry Ghosts

Phuket plays host to hungry ghosts Thailand is readying itself for hungry ghosts this August, as Phuket's large ethnic Chinese population celebrates the Por Tor Festival.

The event, which is similar to China's Hungry Ghost festivals, follows ancient Chinese traditions that state that during the seventh Chinese month the gates of Hades open, unleashing the spirits of the dead on an unsuspecting public.

The festival recognises that the dead, if left hungry, can become malicious. So in order to keep the spirits happy, residents of Phuket give the dead gifts of food, flowers and candles.

Common gifts given to spirits include cakes made into the shape of turtles. These flour based offerings are made to represent the long-life span of turtles, in the belief that the offering will help worshippers extend their own lives.

The event takes place between August 22nd and September 3rd in the resort of Phuket.
