Travellers looking for a festival with a difference might want to look up some cheap hotels and take a look at the Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival in Thailand.
Taking place in mid-May in the province of Yasothon, this unique event sees a number of spectacular rituals performed over a three-day period to mark the beginning of the traditional planting season for farmers in the country.
As you might expect from the name of the festival, the highlight of this colourful event is a series of old-fashioned rockets being fired into the sky from traditional carts.
There is also a host of processions and parades, cheerleading contests, the Miss Bun Bang Fai beauty contest and a raft of performances from singers, dancers and actors.
Little ones get to enjoy a funfair, while those looking to immerse themselves in some traditional Thai culture can check out a range of folk-related side events.
