Veg out in Phuket

Veg out in Phuket People head to Thailand for many things, such as sun and sea, culture and wildlife, but for vegetarians there's a special reason to go in October when the Phuket Vegetarian Festival takes place.

Also known as Ngan Kin Jeh, the festival runs from October 21st to the 30th and offers some extraordinary sights to visiting culture vultures.

The festival is part of a nine day period of spiritual purification, beginning with abstension from meat, alcohol and sex, continuing with acts such as pushing steel rods through cheeks, fire walking and body piercing, in a tradition dating from the 19th century.

The practice began after a travelling Chinese musical tour party who fell ill and committed acts of self-immolation as an act of spiritual atonement and has been commemorated ever since.

Phuket is a major tourist centre and offers plenty more in addition to the festival, with white sandy beaches by an aquamarine sea, leisure activities ranging from scuba diving to kick boxing, exciting nightlife and a range of accommodation in numerous resorts, including plenty of cheap hotels.
