Tunisia lies off the northern coast of Africa. It has a population approximately 1 million and covers about 164,000 square kilometres. The country is situated in a strategic position as far as trade and commerce goes. Once hailed as the link to many ancient civilisations and once the abode of Hannibal. Historic Route
There are two favourite routes that visitors can follow if they so wish. One of these is the Historic Route that criss- crosses across France from one end of the country to the other based on cultural importance. The Historic Routes try’s to cover famous people, artists, monuments, and religious buildings. This route is not that old and only dates back until the 1970’s. The “route historique “ has now been trade marked in 1989. The success of this historic route continues to grow at a pace and since 2000 the Federation Nationale des Routes has helped hugely.
Just a few of the favourite sites on the Historic route are Abbaye de Royaumont this abbey was founded in 1228 by Louis IX and is a reminder of France’s royal origins. CDT Drome this is considered by many to be the most beautiful castle in the provincial area of Drome. The beautiful Chateau De Cheverny with its fantastic gardens and 17th century tapestries. And finally the Chateau de Conde- Demeure des Princess set in its own parkland with three hundred old years’ trees.
Climate and Geography in Tunisia
The summers in Tunisia are hot with temperatures reaching temperatures of 120°F in peak summer and a humidity of about 65%. These temperatures leave the land brown, dry and arid during the hot summer months. The winter is somewhat cooler with temperatures of around 50°F and occasionally chilly but hardly ever below freezing.
The land stays green and lush through winter and spring and the sky is usually cloudless throughout the year. Rain falls infrequently however an average of 100 days of rainfall occurs throughout winter and spring months.
Sport and Leisure in Tunisia
The population of Tunisia is keen sports enthusiasts with sporting events regularly have huge spectator audiences and many taking parts. Football is probably the favourite pastime and the world cup finals creating a national fever throughout the country. The country has twelve league teams from a number of the cities and large towns and a league trophy is competed for annually. There is also an additional trophy to be played for throughout the African nations and Tunisia are the current championship holders, thus enabling a position as competitors for the world Cup to be held in Germany.
Tunisia also has a strong basketball and handball team and the World Handball championships were recently hosted here. Tunisia having a temperate climate enables a variety of international sports such as tennis, golf, sailing and water sports and many sports centres are located within the abundance of hotels to be found in this country.
