Abta: 3m to head overseas this Christmas The period between December 17th and January 3rd will see three million British people travelling overseas, according to estimates by Abta - The Travel Association.

Cheap hotels in Dubai could prove popular, with Abta predicting that the emirate will welcome high numbers of Brits looking for some winter sun.

Other destinations such as Tenerife, Egypt, Turkey and the Caribbean will be visited by people trying to escape the cold weather at home.

Abta also predicted that some of the world's leading city break destinations will prove popular with Brits over Christmas, including Amsterdam, Paris, New York and Dublin.

Heathrow and Gatwick will be the busiest airports, with projected passenger traffic of 1.5 million and 500,000 people respectively.

Manchester is set to handle some 320,000 travellers, making it the busiest base outside London.

Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta, said: "Holidays – especially at this time of year – can provide happy, lifelong memories and an opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends."
