Areas of Interest in Dubai

The Creekside Park is beautiful to walk through and also offers a cable car as an alternative to enjoy the amazing views.   The park is palm filled with white sands  and lush lawns.

Water taxi’s are the cheapest bargain of Dubai.  There are three set routes in total, one of which runs from Baniyas Abra Station to Al Seef Abra Station allowing you to walk up the creek one way and back in the other direction.  An abra can also be hired for an hour allowing you to cruise anywhere.

Bur Dubai Souk consists of restored wooden arcades where anything from alarm clocks and Bollywood DVDs to tailored suits can be bought.  The Deira Covered Souk should also be visited for a great range of products from kandooras to kitchenware.  The Deira Gold Souk, Deira Spice Souk and Perfume Souk are also worth visiting.

The Bastakiya area is interesting to explore.  The maze of lanes are lined by elegant courtyard houses built in the early 20th century by Persian merchants.  The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding offer guided walks through the area to share historical and architectural details.  The centre opens 9am to 3pm daily.

The Dubai Museum displays exhibits on the development of Dubai from fishing village to modern city and can be found in Al-Fahidi Fort.  The House of Sheikh Saeed al-Maktoum displays photographs of Dubai from the 1940s to 1960s.  It is situated along the Shindagha waterfront amongst the restored limestone and gypsum buildings.

During winter months visit the Nad Al Sheba Camel Racetrack to experience the crazy atmosphere of camel racing.  It takes place early each morning around 7am.  During the rest of the year training can be watched at 5pm each day.

Eating Out in Dubai

The Basta Art Café on Al-Fahidi Street has a courtyard to sit in and serves refreshing foot.  The special is a grilled haloumi cheese and asparagus salad with a fresh mint and lime juice.

Beit Wakeel was once the former headquarters of the British East India company and is now a casual restaurant.  It offers a different atmosphere with seating on a wooden deck over the water.

The Bastakiah Nights is a century old mansion restaurant that can be found on the Bastakiya quarter.  It serves Middle Eastern Arabic cuisine with excellent service and attention to detail.  The interior is exquisite, with rooms set around a courtyard.  The roof terrace also offers water views.

Almost every hotel in Dubai offers a bar.  The Park Hyatt Hotel offers a terrace next to boats on the creek for a relaxing drink with a view.

From the Airport to Dubai

The Airport is just 4 kilometres from the city centre area and so only takes around 15 minutes travelling time.  Buses run to the city centre and to Jumeirah Beach.
