Qatar to Create Sports Oasis in Desert
The government in Dubai has announced that it is to spend almost $4 billion on two sports complexes in the middle of the desert.
The Dubai Sports City is expected to transform the vast, sprawling desert into a futuristic sports campus for some of the world's most talented sports men and women, reports the Associated Press.
"This will confirm the position of Qatar on the map of sport business," Abdulla Khalid Al Qahtani, director general of the Asian Games Organizing Committee, told the news agency.
"Hopefully by the end of the games, we'll be the centre of sport excellence in the Middle East and be recognised as a centre of excellence in Asia," he added.
The complex is expected to house a 60,000-seat outdoor stadium, a 25,000-seat cricket stadium, a 10,000-seat indoor arena, a 5,000 to 10,000-seat hockey and athletics venue and a golf course.
Manchester United Football Club has already opened a football academy in Dubai and Bayern Munich regularly trains there.
