Bang the Drum for Durham
For a Christmas festival in a truly historic setting, Durham may be just the place on December 2nd and 3rd.
The historic north-eastern town holds the fair in the marketplace, with all kinds of market stalls to browse and do some Christmas shopping at, while there is live music and entertainment all around the city.
Durham is a city filled with grand architecture to delight those who enjoy their medieval buildings.
Among its treasures is the castle, set high above the River Tees, plus the cathedral, dating from 1093, whose 215-foot tower offers a spectacular view across the city and surrounding countryside.
Durham Cathedral was voted the nation's favourite building in a BBC poll in 2001 and the two structures together form a world heritage site.
Durham has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels, as do the nearby, vibrant cities of Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland, which are famous for their nightlife.
