Black Comedy

Black comedy For those who fancy something completely different, the town of Ramsbottom, north of Manchester, provides an unusual reflection on the historic rivalry between Lancashire and Yorkshire in September, when the World Black Pudding Throwing Championship takes place.

Run at the Royal Oak Pub, this event - staged just a few miles from the birthplace of the delicacy in Bury - sees competitors trying to beat each other by knocking down the largest number of Yorkshire puddings mounted on a wall.

Visitors can reach Bury from Manchester by tram and take the historic East Lancashire Railway steam train up to Ramsbottom, adding an extra bit of history and tradition to the trip.

While there, many will want to try the delicious food themselves, which is made from boiled pig's blood and fat wrapped in intestine.

The Manchester and Bury areas have plenty of cheap hotels to accommodate visitors.
