Fans of highland sports who want to enjoy a right royal occasion can do so at the world famous Braemar Gathering, which invariably takes place on the first Saturday of September every year.
In 2007 this date falls on September 1st, with the stands at the Braemar sports field packed as the Queen and other members of the royal family make the short trip from Balmoral to partake in a tradition which goes back way before the Victorian connections with Royal Deeside, all the way in fact to the days of Scottish king Malcolm Canmore in the 12th century.
Naturally enough, there is plenty of caber tossing, hammer throwing, running and other sports, with enough bagpipes, highland dancing and tartan to fulfil the wishes of anyone hoping to enjoy highland culture.
Located in the Cairngorms National Park, those staying in cheap hotels will find that the area also offers outstanding scenery and wilderness, with several of the highest mountains in Scotland close by and rare species such as red squirrels in evidence.
Alternatively, those who fancy a wee dram can head for the nearby Lochnagar Distillery.
