Celebrate Handel in London
Opera lovers should get their cheap hotels in London booked soon if they want to enjoy the 2008 Handel Festival presented by the Royal College of Music.
Founded in 1978 by Denys Darlow, this annual event pays homage to George Frideric Handel by staging a number of his works at locations across London.
The majority of the performances take place at St George's Church in Hanover Square, an establishment that was visited by Handel himself when he lived in London.
This church will serve as the venue for the opening of the festival on March 13th when it hosts a performance of Joshua, an opera that was first staged in 1748.
It will be the conclusion to the Handel Festival that will arguably attract the most visitors, however, as a fully-staged version of Atalanta comes to the Britten Theatre at the Royal College of Music.
This production, which is in collaboration with the Benjamin Britten International Opera School, will be staged on April 21st, 23rd and 24th.
Handel composed Atalanta in 1736 to celebrate the wedding of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Coburg.
