Cheesy Does It
Those who fancy spending early May indulging in some time-honoured festivals from the age of Ye olde Merrye England can find just the sort of thing in the Cotswold village of Randwick near Stroud.
Held on Saturday May 12th 2007, the Randwick Wap involves all kinds of fun with three large cheeses, all double Gloucester of course, with one rolled seven times round the church before being cut up and given to locals, which is traditionally said to guarantee the fertility of those who eat it.
Extra entertainment is then provided by a procession in which the mayor and procession queen are carried off in great grandeur
before the mayor is dunked in a pool of water.
Following this, the other cheeses are rolled down the Well Leazes, a local steep hill, followed by tumbling racers trying to be first down to claim the dairy items.
Apart from the traditional festivities, Gloucestershire offers a variety of attractions, with beautiful scenery, architecture and easy walking in the Cotswolds, Forest of Dean and Severn Valley.
It also has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
