Claridges Top for Tea

Claridges top for tea Claridges hotel in London has been awarded the Tea Guild's Top London Afternoon Tea 2006 award.

The swanky London hotel beat some of the capital's other top hotels, including the Four Seasons, the Dorchester and the Wolseley.

This year was also the first year that the Tea Guild, which is part of the Tea Council, presented an award for excellence to the Four Seasons at Hamilton Place, the Savoy and the Milestone hotels.

An award for excellence was also handed to last year's winner, the Lanesborough hotel on London's Hyde Park Corner.

Teas at Claridges will set visitors back £28.50 but according to a spokesman for the Tea Council, "afternoon tea amid elegant surroundings is a treat".

This is the 21st year of the Top Tea awards, which involves a panel of mystery drinkers visiting each hotel with a list of criteria. These include crockery, décor and the varieties of tea available.

Claridges was chosen as this year's champion because of the staff's knowledge and attentiveness, as well as the excellent range of teas and treats on offer.
