Cumberland Porky Pies

Cumberland porky pies Those who are good at telling shaggy dog stories could find themselves in their element in the western Lake District in November when the Bridge Inn at Santon Bridge hosts the world's biggest liar competition.

It is held as a tribute to Will Ritson, the 19th century landlord of the nearby Wasdale Head Inn, who proclaimed that not only did the valley have England's deepest lake (Wastwater) and highest mountain (Scafell Pike), but it also had the biggest liar (Ritson himself).

Whether one believes a word of that, visitors staying in cheap hotels in the Lake District can take part in the competition (date to be confirmed) provided they are not a professional liar - the rules bar lawyers and politicians from participating.

It's no lie to say that the area offers a wealth of wonderful attractions for visitors.

Wasdale does in fact offer access to the two highest mountains in England, as well as a huge range of other fellwalks, while the Wasdale Screes, a three-mile long curtain of loose rock, slides at a spectacularly steep angle into the lake.

Also nearby is the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, a narrow gauge steam line running through idyllic countryside, the Hardknott Roman Fort and the Sellafield Visitor Centre, which offers free entry.
