Don't Chicken in

Don't chicken in Those thinking of heading into Yorkshire over the May Bank Holiday can have lots of fun, hopefully without a repeat of the events of 1850.

An historic mining town near Wakefield, Gawthorpe's maypole and other May Day frolics have centuries of tradition behind them, but it went terribly wrong when Gawthorpe installed a permanent maypole instead of a temporary one and jealous neighbours from Chickenely tried to pull it down, leading to a pitched battle and one death.

Luckily, these days nothing but fun is on the agenda as traditional maypole dancing and a procession are the order of the day.

Those staying in cheap hotels in West Yorkshire over the bank holiday weekend have a range of interesting things to see and do.

Leeds is just to the north, with its bustling nightlife, while just beyond lies the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
