Don't Let Rain Stop Play

Don't let rain stop play The world's most famous tennis tournament, Wimbledon, starts today (June 26th 2006).

All of the world's best tennis players, from the soon-to-be-retiree Andre Agassi, the seemingly unbeatable Roger Federer and England's very own also-ran Tim Henman will be competing to lift the trophy.

Although rain has stopped play on day one of the tournament, the recent good weather seen throughout the UK should mean that strawberries and cream and a glass of champagne in the sunshine could well be a reality for tennis fans.

The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon, as they are officially known, have developed from the garden party atmosphere of the first meeting in 1877, where a few hundred spectators turned up, into a highly professional tournament attracting an attendance of close to 500,000 people.

Competitors from over 60 nations regularly compete in front of a television audience of millions worldwide.

The main events, the men's and women's finals are set to take place on July 9th 2006, so anyone lucky enough to have a ticket for the event might even see Britain's own Andrew Murray lift the title – or possibly another crushing Federer display.
