Downhill All the Way
Early September sees the International Cycling Union's mountain biking world championships taking place amid the magnificent scenery of the Scottish highlands as the Nevis Range course near Fort William hosts the event.
Between September 3rd and 9th daring mountain bikers can hurtle down the course from over 2,000 feet above sea level, hurtling over and down humps, whizzing round corners and doing their utmost to stay on their feet and not crash into the pine trees that cover the lower part of the course.
Spectators will not just be able to enjoy the exploits of the bikers but also the superb scenery, including nearby Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain.
The Nevis Range also has a cable car which can take bikers, spectators and mountain climbers alike up to the restaurant and gift shop which lies over 2,000 feet up on Aonach Mor, which along with its neighbour on the ridge, Aonach Beag, is over 4,000 feet high.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Fort William will be able to enjoy a wide range of mountain climbs, as well as the Falls of Steall and scenes where the film Braveheart was shot.
Form William also offers plenty of good eating and pubs, a distillery and museums.
