Duck into It
Those who fancy a race on the Thames with a difference can forget about Oxford v Cambridge, for it is ducks not dons who are the stars of the show in early September.
The Great British Duck Race is to be held on September 2nd 2007 over a one kilometre stretch of the river near Hampton Court Palace on the south-western edge of London in an event which is being held in a quacking cause: Raising over £500,000 for charities.
Anyone interested in the race just has to pay £2 to adopt one of the 165,000 rubber ducks plus £3 towards the charity of their choice, with the winning duck earning its owner a £10,000 prize, organisers have stated.
While the rubbery racers may top the bill, those winging their way round south-west London will find plenty of interesting things to see and do.
Hampton Court Palace itself is a major tourist attraction, while the area also includes Kew Gardens and the wide open spaces of Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common.
London has plenty of accommodation, including cheap hotels.
