Edinburgh 'a Top Literary Destination'
The city of Edinburgh has been voted one of the world's top literary destinations.
Editors from TripAdvisor, the online travel community, compiled a list of the top ten literary locations around the globe based on the fact that they have been the home to or inspiration for great writers.
Edinburgh was ranked third in the list of destinations, with TripAdvisor stating that authors based in the city have created some of the best-loved characters in literature, including Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter.
People staying in cheap hotels in Edinburgh can take a walking tour of the Old Town to learn more about Scotland's literary history.
Visitors can also gather knowledge about such significant cultural figures as Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson.
Top of the list of literary destinations was London, where visitors can visit a home once occupied by Charles Dickens and see the house where Benjamin Johnson wrote the first comprehensive English dictionary.
