Edinburgh Film Festival Turns 60

Edinburgh film festival turns 60 The Edinburgh International Film Festival celebrates its 60th birthday as it hosts the latest incarnation, between August 14th and 27th 2006.

Having evolved a great deal since it began, the event is still the longest continually running film festival in the world.

The last ten years have seen an improvement in the critical opinion received by the festival, through the artistic direction of Mark Cousins, Lizzie Francke and Shane Danielsen.

Notable films showcased in the last few years include The Full Monty, East is East, Run Lola Run, Billy Elliot, Amelie, and Infernal Affairs, with organisers stating that a passion and commitment to excellent cinema has led to the event's success.

The 2006 installment will be held in a number of venues across the city, including Dominion, Cameo and Filmhouse.

Edinburgh, also known for its comedy festival, has a vibrant nightlife and many cheap hotels for visitors to stay in, making it a popular destination for many UK holidaymakers.
