Murrayfield is the home of Scottish Rugby Union. The stadium once held a record crowd for rugby, when in 1975 a game between Wales and Scotland was watched by a crowd of 104,000. Today's capacity has been reduced to an all seated crowd of 67,800.
Murrayfield stadium is situated in the west-end of Edinburgh just off Corstorphine Road, very close to Edinburgh Zoo. The land, on which the stadium is built, was bought by the Scottish Football Union in the year 1925. The stadium was built in that same year, and. Scotland's first game at their new home, was against the old rivals England. Scotland beat England on the day, winning their first Five Nations Grand Slam tournament. Murrayfield today, is used for all Scottish rugby international games, as well as the home of Edinburgh's own professional team. Edinburgh is one of Scotland's two teams, which are playing in the Magners premier league. The stadium has also been used to host IRB Sevens World Series and the Heineken Cup Final in the year 2005.
Although, Murrayfield is known to most as the home of Rugby, football is also played on occasions at the stadium. The first game of football played at Murrayfield, was between local Edinburgh team Hearts, against a Portuguese team Sporting Braga.
Hearts were forced to play all their European fixtures for 2006/2007, when UEFA decided that Tynecastle stadium did not pass their criteria.
Hearts also choose Murrayfield, as the stadium to host a match between themselves, and Barcelona in July 2007. The switch of venue was a huge success, with a crowd of almost 58,000 watching the game.
Murrayfield is more than just a sports stadium today, with summer concerts helping the financing of the stadium. Major artists such as David Bowie, U2, Travis, Texas, James Brown and The Proclaimers have all rocked the stadium over the years.
If you should be going to Murrayfield in the future, the stadium is well serviced by bus links. Also the stadium can be reached by train, with Haymarket station, being about a fifteen minute walk away.
