Explore 100 Years of Photography in Manchester
Visitors to Manchester this year will have the opportunity to browse through a century of history captured on camera at a special exhibition.
The Lowry will host A Long Exposure: 100 Years of Pictures from Guardian Photographers from October 18th until March 1st 2009.
Some of the most memorable examples of photographic journalism will be included in the exhibition, which is curated by one of the Guardian's top photographers, Denis Thorpe.
A number of Thorpe's own pieces will appear in the display, including a shot of helicopter searchlights on the Strangeways prison siege and an image of Brian Keenan shortly after his release from captivity in Beirut.
Other highlights will include an aerial view of a World War II battlefield, a portrait of playwright Arthur Miller and a picture of Winston Churchill on a visit to Manchester Town Hall.
