Fantasy and Function Collide
The concepts of romance and practicality, fancy and efficiency will be combined at an exhibition in Edinburgh this summer.
Fantasy and Function, a display from the National Gallery Complex Department of Prints and Drawings, opened on May 3rd and will close on August 3rd.
The show features around 30 prints of elaborate designs for jewellery, tableware and ornaments which were produced by highly skilled engravers.
Pieces in the display range from fantastical 16th century French creations to commemorative tablewear from the 1800s.
The works provided inspiration and instruction for gold and silversmiths and have been exhibited to acknowledge the skill of printmakers as well as the ingenuity of the original craftsmen.
Art lovers staying in cheap hotels in Edinburgh will find the National Gallery Complex on the Mound. The gallery houses Scotland's collection of fine art from the time of the early Renaissance to the end of the 19th century.
