Flaming Good Fun
Scotland is famous for celebrating New Year's Eve, or hogmanay, more fervently than most other nations and one of the most eye-catching observations of the event traditionally takes place in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.
When midnight comes a procession of people swinging balls of fire march through the streets of the town towards the harbour.
Once the parade reaches the waterfront the flaming spheres are hurled impressively into the sea.
With up to 60 people often taking part, this event can be one of the most visually striking ways to celebrate the onset of the new year, but it is certainly not for the faint of heart.
Fireball-swinging is a practice that can reportedly be traced back through the Middle Ages and is even thought to have its roots in ancient times, before the spread of Christianity.
People planning a stay in a cheap hotel in Scotland to celebrate Hogmanay should head to Stonehaven for a unique and unforgettable experience.
