Glasgow Declared a City of Music
Glasgow has been declared an official City of Music by Unesco nearly 20 years after it held the title of European capital of culture in 1990.
Bob Winter, Glasgow's Lord Provost, accepted the title from Unesco director general Koichiro Matsuura at a lunch today (August 20th).
Mr Winter said that it was "wonderful" to be accepting the award on behalf of Glasgow from Mr Matsuura.
He added: "I am thrilled that Glasgow's rich and varied musical heritage has been recognised by Unesco.
"We embrace the award on behalf of our talented musicians and composers whose work has contributed to our great city being given the permanent prestige of being a City of Music. I am confident this can only boost our musical ambitions and encourage and nurture future musical talent."
It is estimated that Glasgow hosts 127 music events every week and receives £75 million in revenue from music every year.
Venues that people staying in cheap hotels in Glasgow can visit to sample the city's music scene include the Barrowland Ballroom, the Garage, the SECC and the Royal Concert Hall.
