Glasgow Hotels Proving Popular This Year
Cheap hotels in Glasgow have been proving increasingly popular this year, according to new figures.
The Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) released statistics showing that hotel occupancy reached 77 per cent in May this year, compared to 73 per cent in the same month in 2008.
This year's May occupancy rate was the second highest recorded in the month in more than ten years.
Several events were held in Glasgow in May that would have bumped up hotel guest numbers, including the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships and the Gymnastics Grand Prix.
Scott Taylor, chief executive of the GCMB, said: "These figures prove that Glasgow continues to be seen throughout the world as an attractive short break destination, as well as a top-class location for major sporting events, conferences and exhibitions.
"While these numbers are extremely encouraging, GCMB will continue to work hard together with its partners to ensure Glasgow remains a popular destination in what is a highly competitive environment."
The marketing organisation has recently been promoting the World Pipe Band Championships and the Piping Live! festival, both of which will be held in August.
