Glasgow Launches Kiddy Olympics

The first children's Olympics will take place in Glasgow this September, it was announced this week.

Plans for the UK School Games are hoped to unearth talent for the London Olympics in 2012 and were backed by Gordon Brown in his Budget speech.

The first event in Glasgow will take place from the September 7th to 10th and will feature sports such as swimming, athletics and gymnastics.

It is anticipated that the Glasgow Games will receive £1.5 million of funding from the Millennium Commission, which distributes Lottery money.

Children from across the UK are expected to compete at a local, regional and national level for their chance to represent their region in Glasgow.

Tessa Jowell, the Olympics minister, commented that the event would be a "fantastic celebration of sport for young people".

It is expected that more sports will be added to the children's Olympics in the build up 2012 and other cities in the UK will have a chance to bid to host future events.
