Go Treasure Hunting in Scotland
People staying in cheap hotels in Edinburgh, Glasgow or any other destination in Scotland will be able to participate in a web-based treasure hunt that has been arranged as part of the Homecoming Scotland tourism initiative.
The precious item that visitors will be searching for is a £10,000 gold and diamond mouse once owned by Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet.
According to legend, Burns buried the keepsake somewhere in Scotland as a gift for his lover and gave clues as to its whereabouts in a series of letters that were only recently discovered in a piece of furniture that was being sold.
Treasure seekers can log on to the Burns Bequest website if they are interested in paying a fee to see the letters and attempting to solve the riddle of where the mouse is hidden.
Joe Gibbs, the man who put together the Bequest project along with John Keiller, said: "I have long been an admirer of Kit Williams' 1970s book-based hunt for a golden hare - Masquerade - and decided the current economic circumstances were auspicious to launch a web-based treasure hunt.
"We decided on a Burns theme because of John's interest in the subject and because it is one of the major themes of Homecoming Scotland."
Homecoming Scotland, which was arranged to mark the 250th anniversary of Burns' birth, will see events being held across Edinburgh and other destinations throughout the year.
