Great Balls of Silver
For those who love strange old traditions England offers plenty, from cheese-rolling to gurning, but few could be as strange, or as old, as the hurling of the St Ives silver ball.
The first Monday in February is feast Monday, when the Mayor throws the ball from the church wall to the beach at 10.30 GMT?, to be thrown again and again amongst the youth of the town until the holder of the ball when the clock strikes noon receives a silver crown piece (five shillings) from the Mayor.
While visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area will be able to enjoy the spectacle, they will also be able to enjoy many more wonders in this far-flung corner of England.
The sea is forever close at hand, with Land's End and St Michael's Mount at Marazion both just a few miles away.
St Ives' rugged shoreline forms part of the South West Coastal Path, a long distance walk that explores in detail the wild and rugged Devonian and Cornish coast.
