Hotels in Newcastle Welcoming More Visitors
Cheap hotels in Newcastle and Gateshead were a popular option this summer, with the region seeing its highest occupancy rates for three years, according to new figures.
Marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI) revealed that an unprecedented 83 per cent of hotel rooms were occupied in city centre and quayside areas in July.
Nearly three quarters (73 per cent) of city and quayside hotel rooms were occupied in August this year the highest rate for the month since 2005.
Andrew Dixon, chief executive of NGI, said that the figures are evidence of the fact that, despite the economic downturn, "it's not all doom and gloom".
He added: "Our region is experiencing consistently improving hotel occupancy figures and despite a less than temperate summer we have recorded the best summer hotel occupancy rates for three years.
"Perhaps Newcastle-Gateshead is bucking a trend with a greater number of visitors staying in our hotels, experiencing our friendly welcome and exploring our countryside, coast, heritage and modern icons."
Mr Dixon said the figures are made "all the more remarkable" by the fact that there has been a 68 per cent increase in city centre hotel capacity since 2002.
