Indian Jewellery on Display in London

Indian jewellery on display in London A new exhibition displaying items taken from the royal courts of India's Maharajas has opened in London.

People who are visiting the city after flying into Stansted can view the items, which have been taken from the homes of Indian rulers who lived between the 18th and 20th centuries, at the Victoria and Albert museum (V&A).

The display includes a bejewelled model elephant, thrones, gem-encrusted weapons and a number of other rarely seen and valuable objects.

Mark Jones, director of the V&A, told the BBC: "There has never been an exhibition like this before, showing the spectacular treasures of the courts of the maharajas.

"Many of the objects have left India for the first time to come to the V&A."

He added that the exhibition illustrates how the role of India's ruler changed during the between the 18th and 20th century.

Visitors to London will be able to see the exhibition at the V&A until January 17th.
