Interest in UK Destinations 'will Last Beyond Recession'
The high interest that is currently being shown in many British travel destinations will outlast the recession, according to an industry spokesman.
Peter Hampson, director of the British Resorts and Destinations Association, said that domestic tourism offers a number of benefits to travellers, including convenience and diversity.
This is in contrast to the situation in the 1980s and early 90s, when a lack of investment and an explosion of interest in overseas destinations left the British tourism industry in "freefall", according to Mr Hampson.
Commenting on the advantages of domestic tourism, the British Resorts and Destinations Association director said: "It is so flexible, because it can be half a day to a fortnight.
"Within a couple of hours you can be in the Highlands of Scotland or in the middle of Birmingham, there is such a variety."
Cheap hotels in Birmingham could have been a popular option for Brits taking Easter breaks this year, with a VisitBritain survey finding that 73 per cent of people who were planning an overnight trip intended to visit a destination in England.
