Islands in the Fun

Islands in the fun Anyone thinking Britain's most northerly outpost might lack interest will be reckoning without the 27th Shetland Folk Festival, held from May 4th to the 6th.

The event sees traditional Celtic music and arts taking centre stage in a variety of locations in these wild islands, the rhythm and beat of drums, flutes and bagpipes providing a rich flavour of the life and culture of the islands.

Peformers lined up on the festival programme include Mary Black, Sharon Shannon, Four Men and a Dog, Shine and the Toy Hearts.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels can enjoy the performances in seven different locations, the most remote being the tiny island of Skerries.

Away from the music, the Shetlands provide wild scenery, beautiful seascapes, extensive opportunities for birdwatching, long evenings as summer approaches and, above all, the chance to truly get away from it all.
