London Culture 'best in the World'

London culture 'best in the world' People staying in cheap hotels in London are spoilt for choice where cultural distractions are concerned, according to a recent report.

A 'cultural audit' commissioned by the London Development Agency found that the English capital trumped its international competitors in the cultural stakes.

London has more museums and theatres than New York, Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo, according to the report.

Visitors will be able to find a total of 184 museums in London, as well as 55 theatres and nine concert halls, which host more than 32,000 music performances every year.

And the situation is only set to improve, with mayor Ken Livingstone announcing a new £1.4 million funding package to support cultural projects over the coming years.

"In the four years between now and London 2012 the eyes of the world will be on the capital city, providing a unique opportunity to show off the rich creative and cultural talents that flourish in London," Mr Livingstone said.

"We are working to ensure that those organisations in the creative sector are given all the help they can to achieve this."
